Forget about Business or Premier Economy. If you want accolades, the only way to fly is first class. But when tickets can cost more than 10 times more than an economy seat, how can you justify the expense, even on long-haul flights?
For those who take a left turn on a plane, the difference in experience is significant, including access to VIP lounges on the ground and in the air, better food, service and comfort.
British Airways unveiled its new first class cabin design last week. The cabin includes extra-wide seats (which recline naturally into a completely flat bed), plenty of storage space, and touchscreen controls. It is scheduled to debut on the Airbus A380 from 2026.
But how does it compare to what other airlines are doing? We’ve compared the first class offerings from the major airlines to see what you get for your money.
Mileage Favorite: Singapore Airlines
Among the various travel experts and first class fliers I spoke to, their preferred option was clear. It’s Singapore Airlines.
Boeing 777s have wide, hand-stitched leather seats that are partitioned for privacy. Our ‘Book the Cook’ service allows you to order meals up to 24 hours before your flight from a wider menu than is available on board.
But it’s the little details like mood lighting, entertainment systems and attentive service that regular guests say they love.
The only downside, one person told me, is that “more influencers are forgetting that we’re not only paying for the service, but also for the privacy.”
“The constant selfies being taken in VIP rooms and videos taken on board cannot be understated, but our staff manages them carefully and effectively.”
A first class flight from London Heathrow Airport to Singapore costs around £7,694 if booked three months in advance.
And if you want to enjoy it all this year, take the final extra step and book a suite. Airbus A380 options take you to a new level of luxury.
Privacy Policy: Emirates
The United Arab Emirates’ national carrier is popular for the suites it offers to first class passengers on its A380s. This is basically a sliding door that closes the seat into a small room.
There are also shower suites and a lounge bar on board for socializing.
A first class ticket from London Heathrow to Dubai International costs around £7,769 if booked three months in advance.
If you want to relax, go with Cathay Pacific.
Sometimes there is a limit to the amount of champagne you can drink. So, if you want to get some rest on an airline, Cathay Pacific is the obvious choice.
The airline’s famous reclining seats become extra-wide lie-flat flight beds with thick mattresses, comfortable linens and pillows.
A first class flight from London Heathrow Airport to Hong Kong costs around £6,211 if booked three months in advance.
