In January January, you will not be able to move without hitting an article on the New Year resolution. I can’t say the same on February 1st. It may be part of the problem. Every year, it starts in Full Brigit Jones mode and decides to turn new leaves over. Occasionally, we maintain a solution, but not often. In any case, everyday life is back, and we have forgotten everything about them.
We know a lot about ways to work on solutions. For example, it helps to think about daily processes. There is no problem to solve “losing weight” or “weight loss”, but if you make a more specific plan, things may improve: Working through a 5K program from the sofa. , Sign up to the exercise class or stop drinking alcohol on the night.
Social pressure works. If you want to go to the gym regularly, find your exercise companion. Agree to meet during regular times and make sure you are appearing to support each other. This displays positive and negative reasons. To support your friends and not weaken them in public. The gym session will be more fun.
It also works for public commitments. Do you want to stop smoking? Find a friend to bet if you can’t. Do you want to learn to run? Sign up to Charity Fan Run and start collecting sponsorship.
Finding a sign of progressive progress may be motivated. Sometimes the progress is obvious -a faster time, a heavier dumbbell, but in many cases, you need to consider provisional goals. They are still working.
The most important thing is that if you think the whole business is fun, people are likely to stick to the solution. If you are trying to eat healthy food, get a good recipe. If you are trying to stop checking social media on your smartphone, read Trashy Novel instead.
These are five good ideas to stick to your resolution. But did you really need to tell you to you? The problem is that when wearing pink glasses and writing unrealistic dreams to become a better person, we do not think about that. For most people, the solution we do is not safe.
At this point, it may be useful to borrow ideas from educational psychology: “self -regulation learning”. (Psychologist Barry Zimman explained this in a more poetic word that “students are a way to become a master of their learning.” 。 Tactics suitable for doing, studying, practicing, and modifying better things as needed. In the jargon, enter “Self -oriented feedback loop”. No one will be surprised to hear that self -regulated learners are prosperous at school or university.
We do not promise to re -introduce the phrase “Self -oriented feedback loop”, but instead, we will paid to the following three questions that everyone needs to ask about their resolution: What am I doing? How are you doing? What do you need to change?
For example, your determination is to stop drinking alcohol and you have succeeded. Think not to beat yourself to fail, scoop or give up your shoulders. Perhaps if you are with your friends every few weeks, you may decide to drink. Change the resolution and declare victory.
Or you may have decided that the solution cannot be compromised. Are you okay. See your friends while drinking coffee. Or, with a new determination to drink only beer that does not include alcohol, try again. The point is to seriously think about how the solution is progressing and what you need to change, which is rarely we do.
If you notice that you cannot maintain a specific solution, it is useful for the reason. What stops you? Is there another angle that can work well? White knuckle Will power was not functioning before (rarely), what works instead?
Recommendation
It will return me to January 1st. Katy Milkman, the author of the Warton School of Business, and the author of How to Change, has investigated and spread the “new start effect.” Our birthday. For example, with her colleagues Henchen Die and Jason Lease, she is told that she is told that an experimental subject with a goal will arrive on the “first day of spring” instead of the same. I discovered that there is a high possibility of signing up to receive the reminder. Instead, the date described on March 20.
But if the beginning of January is an attractive time to take a solution, when is the good time to look back on your old resolution, especially under pressure? One possibility is to set goals for every quarter, such as work, fitness, fun, and to confirm old goals when setting new goals at the end of the quarter. This is what I am doing because it is worth it.
That’s not for everyone. This is a easier idea. When writing down the New Year’s resolution, please write down the calendar on March 20. Let’s call it the first day of spring, why? Look closely at them that day. And ask these three simple questions. What did I actually do? How did you go? What do you need to change?
