The owner of British Gas has warned that plunging temperatures are tightening supplies and UK gas outlets have fallen to “worryingly” low levels.
A cold spell over the past five days has seen temperatures drop to nearly -20C in some parts of the UK.
As of Thursday, stock of gas storage facilities in the UK was 26% lower than at the same time last year, and remained about half full, according to Centrica’s announcement on Friday.
The statement said cold conditions in the UK and the termination of Russian gas pipeline supplies through Ukraine on December 31 had reduced gas stock levels across the UK.
“Gas storage levels in the UK are worryingly low,” Centrica chief executive Chris O’Shea said.
