As of the end of the year 2024, the accumulated losses incurred by Meta’s Reality Labs division were $68.9 billion as the company changed its name from Facebook and was pivoted to Mark Zuckerberg’s “Metaverse.”
While some of Facebook’s AI efforts seem to be housed in real life labs, most of the cash burns appear to be driven by Zuckerberg’s much-exaggerated embrace of metaverse. Almost surprisingly, according to Meta’s latest results, revenue for the sector has actually fallen from $2.3 billion to $202.4 billion from its 2021 high.
We will invest the $2 billion we paid to Virtual Reality Headset Maker Oculus in 2014. This is enough to buy Coinbase, General Dynamics, FedEx, The Hilton Hotel Chain, Nasdaq, or perhaps most appropriately. Get Reddit.
If you’re interested in the $70 billion and other changes that could get you recently, check out this latest ad from Horizons of Meta, the company’s flagship virtual reality world (here You can find it on Instagram at, but we put the video tweet below for the embedded issue:

That’s what your comments on Instagram are like. . . unkind.

These days, the horizon appears to be primarily a strict territorial dystopia for thousands of children who were wealthy enough for parents to buy occulus goggles.
This ad is a meta pivot and adds “sad, terminally online adults without IRL friends moaning about their exe in demographics.” Judging from the current political environment that could be a fairly large market segment, it’s still a strange marketing gambit.
If you think this is a bit unfair, don’t forget that this is a company where CEOs have joined the podcast and have accused Apple of insufficient innovation.
Still, Zuckerberg seems certain that this represents the future of his company. Last month, in Meta’s fourth quarter revenue call with analysts, he predicted that 2025 would be “a pivotal year for Metaverse.”
The number of people using Quest and Horizon is growing steadily. And this is the year when many of the long-term investments we’ve been working on have really begun to land, as Metaverse has become more visually stunning and inspirational. So I think we’ll learn more about Horizon’s trajectory by the end of this year.
The cynician may find that Meta hasn’t said yet how many users actually have it.
