Openai issued a statement on Wednesday, clarifying that the Openai tokens distributed to European Union users by the trading platform do not represent the company’s fairness.
“We are not involved in this and we are not supporting it,” a company representative wrote on social media. “Acknowledgement of Openai equity is required. The transfer was not approved. Please be aware.”
Robinhood distributed $5 worth of Openai and SpaceX tokens to clients in the EU region on Monday as part of a push to tokenized stock trading.
In a statement to the Cointelegraph, a Robinhood representative said token giveaways are restricted to “qualified European customers.”
“These tokens are made possible by Robinhood ownership in a special purpose vehicle that gives retail investors an indirect exposure to the private market, initiating access, and by incorporating Robinhood’s ownership in vehicles with special purpose.”
Elon Musk, co-founder of SpaceX and Openai, has had the opportunity to criticize Openai’s corporate structure. “Your ‘fair’ is fake,” Musk said in X’s post.
Musk left Openai’s board of directors in 2018 and later spoke openly about what he viewed as a departure from a nonprofit mission-driven model to a profit-first model. He filed a lawsuit accusing Openai of violating the Charter and misappropriating charitable assets for private interest.

Robinhood announces tokenized real-world asset transactions
Robinhood first tilted its plans to introduce tokenized stock trading to European customers in May 2025. No dates or timelines are given for US expansion.
Speaking at Consensus 2025 in Toronto, Canada, Johann Carblatt, Senior Vice President and General Manager at Robinhood Crypto, said the integration of tokenized real-world assets on the platform will promote financial inclusion.
The company’s foray into tokenized stocks blurs the line between traditional finance and digital finance amid a wide range of crypto exchange efforts to integrate tokenized stocks, government securities, headquarters bonds and other traditional assets into the platform.
Robinhood claims that tokenization opens previously inaccessible asset classes, such as private equity, private credit, and commercial real estate investment, where tokenization invests in the public through the magic of asset fractionation.
Private equity and private credit are typically prohibited by average retail investors as they are reserved for accredited investors over $1 million in investable assets or meet certified annual income and licensing requirements under EU and US regulations.
The company announced the deployment of a Layer 2 blockchain network during the company’s event held in Cannes, France on Monday, tokenizing real-world asset transactions.
“Crypto is more than a speculative asset and could be the backbone of the global financial system,” said CEO and co-founder Vlad Tenev.
