roku Announcing its announcement on Tuesday, Howdy launched a commercial-free streaming service that costs $2.99 a month, with a company shift that has long been known for free, ad-supported viewing.
The streaming platform is expected to have 10,000 hours of movies and TV content Lions Gate, Warner Bros Discovery and their own exclusive programming known as FilmRise and Roku Originals. The service will be available throughout the US starting Tuesday.
“With the launch of Howdy, Roku is making its catalogue’s beloved content accessible to even more audiences,” said Johnny Holden, Chief Revenue and Strategy Director at Radial Entertainment, the parent company of Filmrise, in a press release.
Roku, which manufactures streaming hardware for devices and TVs, launched its Roku Channel in 2017, a free ad-supported streaming option. These types of services are also included. Paramount Global’s pl pic Fox Corp.’s Chubi found growth accelerated in both viewers and advertising revenue.
The new service runs alongside the Roku channel. Howdy was originally available on the Roku platform and will later be rolled out on mobile and other platforms, the company said.
“Pricesed for less than a cup of coffee, Howdy is designed to complement premium services without ads,” said Anthony Wood, founder and CEO of Roku.
In June, the streaming and media giant signed a partnership agreement Amazon Advertising, Tech Behemoth’s advertising business, aims to expand Roku’s reach with advertisers. The agreement gives advertisers access to more than 80 million US households, including fire television streaming devices from Roku and Amazon, according to a press release announcing the partnership.
Roku reported second-quarter revenue on Thursday, recording revenue of $11.1 billion, surpassing analyst expectations. Platform revenues rose 18% year-on-year to $975 million.
