Russia has launched hundreds of drones, several ballistic missiles and several ballistic missiles in four Ukrainian cities, killing at least 14 people in Kiev with the latest indication that Moscow is bolstering its long-range strike campaign.
The Ukrainian capital’s death toll is the worst since July 2024. The cities of Odesa, Chernichv and Zapolijusia were also targeted overnight, causing 17 people to be injured in Odesa.
The first drone was reported in Ukraine around 9pm, with Ukraine’s air defense firing around Kiev until early in the morning.
“This is the way Russia fights, killing civilians in ordinary homes and intentionally. This is an autocratic battle.
About 175 drones, at least 14 cruise missiles and two ballistic missiles targeted Kiev overnight, according to the head of the city’s civilian junta Timur Tukachenko. At least 99 people were injured.
The Interior Ministry said that one missile destroyed part of a high-rise apartment in the city’s Solomiyansky district when it exploded through the ninth floor and near the basement.
City officials say rescue units are located in 27 locations in Kiev.
Zelenskyy said Russia used more than 440 drones and 32 missiles nationwide. “[Russian President Vladimir]Putin hopes the war continues,” said Zelensky, who will be attending Canada’s G7 Summit on Tuesday.
Russia has stepped up its attack pace in recent weeks. It includes a mix of strikes and decoy drones launched into the waves and a mix of ballistic and cruise missiles to overwhelm Ukraine’s weakened air defense.
The overnight air barrage of air targeting several Ukrainian cities on June 8 included a record 479 drones, with Russia currently using hundreds of drones at a time regularly.
A team of Ukrainian anti-aircraft defense unites who tried to fire down Russian drones from machine guns mounted on trucks are reportedly struggling to deal with more complex drones flying at higher altitudes.
