Donald Trump said he “hasn’t seen” the tariff suspension to allow trade negotiations, saying “many countries” are reaching out to negotiate with US officials.
Earlier on Monday, National Economic Council director Kevin Hassett told Fox News that the White House was in contact with 50 countries seeking trade deals.
“We’re going to get fair deals with all countries and good deals, otherwise we’ll have nothing to do with them, they won’t be allowed to join the US,” Trump said.
Trump’s comments come hours after Beijing threatened a 50% tariff on China if it did not withdraw retaliatory taxes in Washington by Tuesday.
“If China does not exceed long-term trading abuse by 34% by tomorrow, April 8, 2025, the US will impose additional tariffs on 50% of China on April 9.”
The US Chinese embassy criticized the latest tariff threat from Trump as a “hegemonic” move.
“This is a typical move in one-sided, protectionism, economic bullying,” said Embassy spokesman Li Pengyu. “We have emphasized many times that pressure or threatening China is not the right way to engage with us. China will firmly protect its legitimate rights and interests.”
Trump’s threat to rapidly spur the obligations in China, the world’s largest exporter, has come a day of sharp volatility in the US market.
The Blue Tip S&P 500 share index shaking over a wide range, but closed only 0.2%. Apple, which is heavily exposed to China through its supply chain, fell 3.7%. The high-tech Nasdaq composite increased the day by 0.1%.
