Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturers announce a $100 million investment in advanced manufacturing in the US to drive away possible chip tariffs from Taiwan.
Trump administration officials said the world’s largest chipmaker will announce on Monday as CC Wei meets the US president at the White House.
The move is the latest corporate overture to Trump in recent weeks. Last week, Apple announced that it would spend more than $500 million in the US over the next four years.
TSMC has already committed $65 billion to build a manufacturing facility in Arizona. It was not immediately clear whether the $100 million investment was an additional funding commitment or whether it included some of the previously promised money.
Trump wants to tax imported semiconductors and dismantle the incentive scheme in which Washington agreed to subsidize $65 billion in TSMC’s US production capacity to $65 billion in investment worth $6.6 billion.
“In the near future, we plan to place tariffs on foreign production of computer chips. Trump told House Republicans on January 27th.
